The #Festival of #Wealth and #Prosperity – #Dhanteras

Dhanteras is celebrated on the 13th day of Krishan Paksha in the Kartik month. Also known as Yamadeepdaan, this festival is celebrated two days before Diwali.

Why is it called Dhanteras ?

Dhanteras marks the beginning of five day festivities of Diwali.

After the Samudra Manthan between the gods and demons, Dhanvantari came out of the sea holding the pot of nectar. This is the reason Dhanteras is also called Dhanvantari Jayanti. In the word Dhanteras, “Dhan” stands for “Wealth” and “Teras” for “Thirteenth”.

On this auspicious day of Dhanteras, Goddess Lakshmi is worshiped to receive blessings from her. She is prayed so that she showers the devotees with prosperity and well being. Clay idols of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi are bought from the market, decorated and are prayed on the day of Diwali. It is even kept in mind that the trunk of Lord Ganesha is turned towards the right just because it is considered more auspicious.

6 #Easy #ways to do your Part for #Eco-#Friendly #Diwali

Over the recent years, this auspicious day has also turned out to be a strain on living standards. As the celebrations ensue, we are coerced into shopping, spending and wasting more during this festive occasion. Air quality levels dwindle to dangerous numbers, vehicles are jam-packed on the road, plastic and food waste increased by mounds and strewn across the streets. Rather than goodness prevailing, there are signs of distress on the things that we value – people, animals and the environment.

If we stop to think about the far reaching consequences our actions bring on this day, we may be able to create some positive changes that will benefit every being and lead to brighter festival.

1. Use oil diyas instead of candles.

2. Make your rangoli with flowers, natural colours, or rice flour.

3. When buying sweets re-use existing cardboard boxes from home.

4. Give a handmade gifts.

5. Wrap your gifts in newspaper.

6. Shop for your festive needs at your nearby local shop rather than the online store.

Karva Chauth Story in the Mahabharat Associated with Arjuna and Draupadi

There are numerous stories associated with the Karva Chauth Vrat. On such story is based on Arjuna and Draupadi in the Mahabharata. Legend has it that once Arjuna went to the mountains to perform intense austerities to please the gods and attain more powerful weapons. Arjuna did not return for several days as he was performing powerful tapas.

Draupadi was worried about Arjuna and sought the help of Sri Krishna. Bhagvan Sri Krishna advised her to observe the Karva Chauth vrat for the well being of her husband.

Sri Krishna then narrated how Goddess Parvati performed the vrat on advice of Shiva for a happy married life.

After hearing this account, Draupadi observed the Karva Chauth vrat and soon Arjuna returned home.

#Eco #Friendly #Ganesh #Idols – Great Way Of Seeking #Lord #Ganesh’s #Blessings

During the holy festival of Ganesh Chaturthi, millions of devotees bring home Ganesh idols and observe Ganesh pooja at their residences in order to seek the Lord’s blessings and gain good fortune and prosperity in their lives. After the pooja, the idols are immersed in nearby ponds, rivers and lakes which pollute the waters of these water bodies severely.

Reasons For Using Eco Friendly Ganesh Idols

1. Most idols nowadays are made from Plaster Of Paris (POP) since it is a light-weight alternative to clay. Plaster Of Paris, however contains several harmful elements such as sulphur, potassium, magnesium, which prove fatal to the environment, especially that of our nearby water bodies.

2. Furthermore, the paint materials that are used to color these idols contain toxic substances such as mercury, cadmium, lead and arsenic which have the ability to make water bodies extremely acidic, thus killing of fish and other organisms.

3. Fortunately, there are alternatives to using idols made from such polluting materials. Eco-friendly Ganesh idols are made from clay, paper or natural fibers, which are bio-degradable (they dissolve in water easily and cause no harm).

4. An increasing numbers of pooja organizers and devotees are opting for the use of eco-friendly Ganesh idols every year. It is a great way to seek the blessings of Lord Ganesh, while also being mindful of our environment.
