Gangotri origin of Holy River Ganges

Gangotri is a small town and a Nagar Panchayat at Uttarakashi district in the state of Uttarakhand, India. Gangotri is around 105 KM from Uttarakashi. Gangotri is accessible by road from Uttarakashi. It is a Hindu pilgrim town on the banks of the river Bhagirathi. It is on the Greater Himalayan Range, at a height of 3,415 m.

History

Gangotri is the origin of the River Ganges and the seat of the goddess Ganga. The river is called Bhagirathi at the source and acquires the name Ganga (Ganges) from Devprayag onwards where it meets with Alaknanda. The origin of the holy river is at Gaumukh, set in the Gangotri Glacier and is a 19 km trek from Gangotri. This small town is centered around the temple of the goddess Ganga, which was built by the Nepalese General, Amar Singh Thapa in the early 18th century. The temple is closed on Diwali day every year and is reopened in the month of May. During this time, the idol of the goddess is kept in Mukhba village, near Harsil.

Worshipping Mother Ganga

The mother Ganga is worshipped as Goddess and the holy river in the temple. Before performing the Puja rituals, a holy dip in the Ganga flowing nearby the temple is a must. The priests belong to Brahmin community from Mukhwa village. Ten of them are selected by rotation every year to perform all the functions covering the temple and they also perform the duties of pandas.
The Temple will be closed from the day of Deepavali and reopens on 6th of May every year. During this period the idol of Mother Ganga is kept in the village of Mukhwa.

6 Reasons To #Try a #Copper #Water #Vessel

Copper is considered an essential mineral for our body.  Ayurveda recommends storing water overnight in a copper jug and drinking it first thing in the morning for maintaining good health.  The water stored this way is called ‘Tamra Jal’ and it helps to balance all three doshas (Kapha, Vata and Pitta.) The metal copper has electromagnetic energy which is called Prana Shakti. Drinking water that is stored for 8-10 hours in a copper vessel is very beneficial.  Copper makes the water ionic which helps to maintain body’s pH (acid-alkaline) balance.

 6 Great Benefits of Copper!

1.  It’s antimicrobial!
“Antimicrobial copper surfaces in intensive care units (ICU) kill 97% of bacteria that can cause hospital-acquired infections,” resulting in a 40% reduction in the risk of acquiring an infection.

2.  It’s a great brain stimulant.
Our brain works by transmitting impulses from one neuron to another through an area known as the synapses. These neurons are covered by a sheath called the myelin sheath that acts like a sort of conductive agent – helping the flow of impulses.

3.  It aids in weight loss.
If diet just doesn’t seem to be helping you lose weight, try drinking water stored in a copper vessel on a regular basis.  Apart from fine tuning your digestive system to perform better, copper also helps your body break down fat and eliminate it more efficiently.

4.  It slows down aging.
If you are worried about the appearance of fine lines, copper is  natural remedy!  Packed with very strong anti-oxidant and cell forming properties, copper fights off free radicals – one of the main reasons for the formation of fine lines – and helps in the production of new and healthy skin cells that replace old dying ones.

5.  Copper has anti-inflammatory properties and helps in arthritis and other inflammatory pains.
This asset is especially great to relieve aches and pains caused due to inflamed joints. In addition to that, copper also has bone and immune system strengthening properties, making it the perfect remedy for arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

6.  It can fight off cancer.
Copper has very strong antioxidant properties that helps fight off free radicals and negate their ill effects – one of the main reasons for the development of cancer.  According to the Cancer Society the exact mechanism of how copper helps prevent the onset of cancer is still not known but some studies have shown that copper complexes have a considerable anti-cancer effect.

How to keep a Copper Water Vessel?

Copper oxidizes naturally and needs to be cleaned at regular intervals. Traditional methods of cleaning copper include rubbing the copper with a mixture of salt and tamarind paste or fresh lemon juice. If not lime, try salt or baking soda and vinegar to clean it.  Allow your water to remain in the jug overnight or at least 8 hours for best effects.  In the morning, enjoy a daily dosage of energized water.
No wonder our ancestors had copper vessels for drinking water. And don’t you think they had lived longer and healthier than their modern aqua-filtering counterparts! A debate may be on, but again, copper water is definitely good for all of us.

The #Journey Of #Ganga

Ganges (Hindi Ganga), major river of the Indian subcontinent, formed in the Himalaya, in Uttarakhand State, India. The Ganges mostly flows in India, except Bangladesh before emptying into the Bay of Bengal. The Ganges Basin, one of the most fertile regions of the world and also one of the most densely populated, lies between the Himalaya and the Vindhyachal Range, and embraces an area of more than 1 million km2 (386,100 mile2).

confluence of bhagirathi and alaknanda at devprayag

The Ganges, about 2,510km (1,560 mile) long, emerges in a snowfield called The Gangotri Glacier, situated among three Himalayan mountains all more than 6,706m (22,000 ft) high. It starts as the Bhagirathi River from an ice cave, 3,139m (10,300 ft) above sea level, and falls 67mts./km (350 ft/mile). About 16 km (10 mile) from the source is Gangotri, the first temple on its banks and a traditional resort of pilgrims. At Devaprayag, 214 km (133mile) from the source, the Bhagirathi joins the Alaknandato form the Ganges.

The Ganges enters the plain from Rishikesh after completing a journey of 229kms. (142 miles) in a rugged tarrain of Himalayas. The Ganges, after descending2,810m (9,276 ft), or an average of about 11 mts/km (60 ft/mile), flows west to the border of the great plain of India at Haridwar, 253 km (157 mile) from its source and ,312mts (1,024 ft) above sea level. From Haridwar it continues south and then south-east to Allahabad after a winding course of 785 km (488 mile), made unnavigable by shoals and rapids.

Ganga , Yamuna , Sangam, Allahabad

At Allahabad, the Ganges is joined by the YamunaRiver from the south-west, and from that point the river flows east pastMirzapur, Varanasi, Ghazipur, Patna, Monghyr, and Bhagalpur, receiving on the south theSon River and on the north the Gumti,Ghaghara, Gandak, and Kosi rivers. In the Rajmahal Hills, at the head of the Ganges delta, 906 km (563 mile) from Allahabad, the river turns south and begins a descent of 455km (283 mile) to the Bay of Bengal. Near Pakaur, the Bhagirathi (assuming the former name of the river) and, 114 km (71 mile) Varansi Ghats, Gangeslower down, the JalangiRiver branch off from the main stream, and after individual courses of 193 km (120 mile) each, unite again to form the Hooghly River, the westernmost and principal channel of navigation, on which the city of Calcutta stands. The main branch of the Ganges, from which numerous minor tributaries flow, continues in Bangladesh, as the Padma River, to the town of Shivalaya (Sibalay), where it unites with the Jamuna, the main branch of the Brahmaputra, and finally runs through the Meghna estuary into the Bay of Bengal.

Between the Meghna estuary and the western channel of the Hooghly River are the several mouths of the deltaic channels. The northern portion of the delta is fertile and well cultivated. The southern section consists mostly ofswampland, known as the Sundarbans, because of the sundari tree that flourishes there. sunderban, mangroves, gangesThemarshes are inhabited by several species ofcrocodile. From year to year the Ganges exchanges old channels for new ones, particularly in the alluvial basin of its lower reaches. Like the Brahmaputra, the Ganges has been adversely affected by the deforestation of valleys in its upper course, causing flooding and an increase in sedimentation around the river’s delta in Bangladesh. This sometimes combines with coastal flooding caused by cyclones to produce inundation of the delta area on a massive scale.

#Ganga in #Hindu #Religion

The story of the Ganges, from her source to the sea, from old times to new, is the story of India’s civilization and culture, of the rise and fall of empires, of great and proud cities, of adventures of man.

According to Hindus the river Ganga is sacred. It is worshipped as a goddess, who holds an important place in the Hindu religion. Hindu belief holds that bathing in the river on certain occasions causes the forgiveness of sins and helps attain salvation. People travel from distant places to immerse the ashes of their kin in the waters of the Ganga; this immersion also is believed to send the ashes to heaven. Several places to Hindus lie along the banks of the river Ganga. People carry sacred water from the Ganges that is sealed in copper pots after making the pilgrimage to Kashi. It is believed that drinking water from the Ganga with ones last breath will take the soul to heaven. Hindus also believe life is incomplete without bathing in the Ganga at least once in their lifetime.

Around 70 million Hindus from around the world participated in Kumbh Mela at the Hindu Holy city Prayaga (Allahabad). The most important city sacred to Hinduism on the banks of the River Ganga is Varanasi or Banaras. It has hundreds of temples along the banks of the Ganga which often get flooded during the rains. This city, especially along the banks of the Ganga, is an important place of worship for the Hindus as well as a cremation ground.

The river is also known as Mandakini, Alaknanda, Bhagirathi and Vishnu Ganga.

The #Ganga, #Holy #River of #India

Ganga has been a symbol of India’s age-old culture and civilization, everchanging, everflowing, yet the same Ganga.

                     – Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, Prime Minister of India

The River Ganga has been the cradle of Indian civilization and symbol of purity to millions. It is treated as one of the most holy rivers of the world. The Ganga is the largest river of the Indian sub-continent. The Ganga-Brahmaputra-Meghna river basin covers only 0.12% of the total landmass of the Earth yet about 10% of the world’s population reside there. It serves the needs of more than 400 million populations.

The Ganges is regarded by Hindus as the most sacred river in the world. Many important religious ceremonies are held in cities on its banks, including Varanasi, Haridwar, and Allahabad. The ganges is a source of divine purification for Hindus who travel by the millions every year to bathe in its waters and to submerge the cremated remains of their dead.

#Gangadhara #Shiva – #Story of #Shiva as #Gangadhar

Gangadhara Shiva is the form of Shiva that holds Ganga on his matted locks. The story of Gangadhar Shiva is associated with the arrival of Ganga on earth. Legend has it that sixty sons of King Sagara were protecting the Ashwamedha horse.

In an Ashwamedha Yaga, the emperor releases a horse which travels through different kingdoms. Those kings who are ready to be a vessal of the emperor do not object the horse running through their kingdom. But those kings that are not ready to be a vassal stop the horse and then the issue is settled on the battleground.

The sixty sons of Sagara were known to be cruel and they practiced all forms of Adharma. Saints, human beings and Devas were fed up with their activities. All of them complained to Indra, the king of Devas. He promised to get solve the problem.

The sixty were following the horse released by King Sagara. One day Indra stole the horse and hid it at the spot where Sage Kapila was meditating.

When the unruly sons discovered horse near Sage Kapila, they thought the saint had stolen it and started abusing and hitting him. Sage Kapila’s meditation was disturbed and the angry saint opened his eyes – reducing the sixty sons into ashes.

Grandson of emperor Sagara reached the spot and prayed for forgiveness to Sage Kapila. The sage could not bring back the sons but he said that they will attain Moksha when in future King Bhagiratha of the lineage will bring Ganga down from heaven to earth.

After several generations, Bhagiratha was born in the family and he performed great austerities and impressed Brahma and Shiva.

Ganga descended from heaven and Lord Shiva held Her in His matted locks so that the power of Goddess Ganga does not destroy the earth.

Shiva thus got the name Gangadhara…one who holds Gangain His matted locks.
